Let’s talk about patience

Patience... are you a patient person?

I am honestly not. I have gotten a lot better than before though.
As a therapist, I learned that every one makes progress in their own way and in their own time. And honestly, it got easier professionally first.

When both the boys were diagnosed, I wanted things to be put in place to support them ASAP. Once I calmed down, I noticed that.. we actually had quite a bit of things in place for them already. And that some things take time- and that is ok.

Now, when my boys don't listen to what I am saying, I first take a few deep breaths. I count to 5 (sometimes longer). I call their names and make sure they are listening to me. Then, I tell them what I want to say. Then, I ask them to repeat what I said to make sure they actually listened and understood what I was saying. If they did not understand what I was saying, then I change the way I am saying it. Once they understand, I praise and thank them for listening and trying to understand.

One of the things that I remind myself of is that the best things in life, many times, take time. And sometimes, when things go too fast, it can go wrong. So, taking our time is not a bad thing! And you know what? Each of us are worth that!

With that in mind, let's jump into our Therapist Mama Bear Weekly tip!
