When I was 20 years old, I finally took the step to go to therapy.
After years of multiple traumas, my mental health was not in a great space.
So, I reached out to my psychology professor and asked for a recommendation for a therapist.
I truly believe that I owe my life to that professor and I am so grateful that he took me seriously.
As a Japanese woman who grew up in the US with traditional parents, therapy was not something that came to my mind easily.
Honestly, it got to the point where I could not leave my house without having a panic attack to say, "ok, I don't think I could do this by myself."
Therapy is something that many people have negative assumptions about.
"Only crazy people go to therapy."
"Weak people go to therapy."
"The therapist tells you everything that you are doing wrong,."
"The therapist is paid to be your friend and agree with you."
These are just some of the many things that I have heard about therapy.
And guess what? None of these are true!!
Being able to admit that we can not help ourselves takes strength.
Then, actually finding a therapist, then making an appointment, and then going to an appointment- all takes strength!
And as a therapist, I can tell you for a fact, that I am not there to say what the person is doing right or wrong.
No one knows that.
I am there to provide a safe space for my clients to examine their lives and find skills to cope and navigate their waves of difficulties.
With that in mind, let's jump into the Therapist Mama Bear weekly tip!
