Let's talk about echolalia

Hello, fellow advocates for autism acceptance and understanding! Today, let's embark on a journey into the world of echolalia, exploring how this unique aspect of autism serves as a pathway to connection and communication.

Remember our glasses metaphor? Let's go back to that again! Each one of our lenses are tinted with vibrant hues that reflect our individual perspectives. Just as no two lenses are alike, no two experiences of autism are the same.

When my boys were diagnosed with autism, we also learned about echolalia. Before they started communicating verbally. they used echolalia often to try to communicate with us. When we did not understand, we were confused often about what they were trying to do! After learning about echolalia, it helped us develop an understanding. They were finding comfort and security in the rhythms of language, using repetition as a tool for understanding and expression, and it helped us to connect with them.

As advocates and allies, it's our responsibility to listen with open hearts and open minds. Let's embrace echolalia as a form of communication, honoring the rich diversity of voices within the autism community. By seeking to understand the unique messages behind each echo, we can nurture meaningful connections and foster a culture of acceptance and empathy.

With this in mind, let's jump into our weekly Therapist Mama Bear Tip!
