Let’s chat about celebrating small wins
One thing that my beautiful autistic twins have taught me is the importance of celebrating small wins.
When my boys were smaller, we did not know if they would be able to communicate with us. I was starting to create pictures that they could point to, having a lot of visual prompts (since they loved those) and more, when they started communicating with us verbally.
Yes, they talk back to us at times. Yes, sometimes they are sassy. And yes, sometimes they (well… usually one of them) can use bad words ( and get redirected for it of course).
But we celebrate it because we acknowledge that this is what we hoped for.
We celebrate when they have a good day at school. We celebrate when other kiddos say hi or bye to them. (Yes, this happened the other day at their new school and I teared up a bit!). We celebrate all the small wins! Because those small wins build up to bigger and bigger wins!
We also celebrate the losses too… but that’s for next time!!
With this in mind… let’s jump into this week’s therapist mama bear tip!
